‘Should have been a try’: Fury as Wests Tigers dudded by ‘crazy’ Bunker call

The poor old Wests Tigers just can’t take a trick at the moment.

After winning two games in a row earlier this season, it looks increasingly likely the Tigers will finish in the bottom part of the ladder after a demoralising 34-10 loss to the Brisbane Broncos on Saturday night.

The Tigers played well in the first half and thought they had a sniff when hooker Api Koroisau dummied and appeared to score a trademark No. 9’s try to make the score 10-6 in the 26th minute.

Michael Ennis said on Fox League: “Anything good has come when Koroisau’s had the ball in hand. Little bit of deception, gets underneath the tackle attempt from (Reece) Walsh and slams the ball down.”

But the Bunker ruled Koroisau had lost control of the ball when he lunged forwards and didn’t regain control before planting the ball on the tryline.

The Bunker official said: “At this point the ball has come away from the hand, which then catches back up and he doesn’t regain possession. This is a knock on.”

Ennis said: “That’s crazy. Watching it at full speed he’s got control of it.

“Even if it starts to move in his hand, he still presses the football down on the line. At no point does it bobble on the ground. That’s crazy.

“They’re the little things that are just not falling for the Tigers at the moment. There’s another call that has gone against them tonight.”

Cooper Cronk said on Fox League: “I think it’s a try. He does a great job to get there. It does come away, there is separation from Api’s hand. But what else can he do? He can’t regrip it, he can’t use to the ground to regrip it. He gets it back on before planting it back down.”

Mal Meninga said: “I think they should do it (replays) in real time just to get a better gauge on whether there was pressure down. It should have been a try.

“That would have made it 10-6. Who would have known? They had a lot of possession and were looking the goods. But it’s same old trick, they just can’t score points.

“They’ve had plenty of opportunities but they just can’t get the ball over the line.”

Rugby league fans were furious Koroisau was denied the four-pointer.

The Supercoach Whisperer wrote on X: “Try with downward pressure isn’t a try anymore?”

Nine’s The Mole said: “WOW.. replays show NO DOUBT Api’s NO TRY was a TRY!!!”

One fan wrote: “Every rugby league fan watching the game knows Api scored that try.”

Predictably, the Broncos ran away with the game in the second half, finishing with six tries.

Fullback Walsh put on a clinic while forward Pat Carrigan and Payne Haas also impressed for the Broncos.

Walsh and Adam Reynolds limped off with muscle cramps but should be cleared to play next week.
