Man stabbed in alleged Sydney home invasion worried family could have been murdered

A man who was allegedly stabbed by ex-wife’s scorned lover in the Sydney suburb of Kellyville has spoken out about the incident.

Police are alleging Lauren Salamakis’ ex-lover Fraser Alexander Thomson, 39, broke into her home at 2.30am on Tuesday and stabbed Paul Salamakis after finding him on the couch.

Lauren had allegedly expressed fears over her safety after having an AVO placed on Mr Thomson.

A violent altercation ensued after Mr Salamakis woke to find Mr Thomson inside. He was allegedly stabbed in the upper arm while attempting to restrain the accused intruder.

Mr Salamakis says he is worried his family could have been murdered if he wasn’t there.

“I think about it over and over, every second, what might have happened if I wasn’t there,” Mr Salamakis told the Daily Telegraph on Wednesday.

“I’m just so glad I was there. We are very, very lucky.”

Mr Salamakis said the family is currently recovering after the traumatic incident.

“We are all going through trauma. Lauren is going through trauma. She’s very anxious about it all, she feels very vulnerable,” he said.

“I’m waiting to see my surgeon but I’m going OK.”

Police allege that Mr Thomson was carrying a backpack containing five litres of acid, a set of handcuffs and four restraints made from rope.

They also allege the 39-year-old was carrying a baseball bat and a machete.

Mr Thomson had been arrested two weeks prior for allegedly visiting the same woman‘s home on August 8, despite a court order prohibiting him from approaching her.

Thomson spent a week in remand until he was granted bail on August 13 by a magistrate.

CCTV footage from a nearby house reportedly captured a figure sneaking around with a black backpack before Thompson allegedly forced his way into the home.

Detective Superintendent Darrin Batchelor confirmed the existence of a current AVO preventing Thomson from being near the house.

“We will be alleging that person was going to the house to do harm,” he said via The Daily Telegraph.

Paul Salamakis, a cafe owner in Sydney‘s western suburbs, suffered upper arm lacerations and was treated at Westmead Hospital.

Thomson also sustained hand wounds from the same knife and was hospitalised under police guard.

Detective Superintendent Batchelor stated that Ms Salamakis was shaken by the incident but not physically injured.

Ms Salamakis remained inside her home on Wednesday with visitors coming to comfort her.

Court records indicate that Ms Salamakis had initially obtained an AVO against Thomson in 2021, lasting two years until May 2023.

Another AVO was put in place in June 2023.

A neighbour reported witnessing a man resembling Thomson in the vicinity on multiple nights prior to the alleged stabbing.

The neighbour suggested that Mr Thomson and Ms Salamakis had an “on again off again relationship”.
