The ink may have dried on Kanye West and Kim Kardashian’s divorce papers, but the drama is as fresh as yesterday.

The former power couple were officially divorced in November 2022, almost two years after Kardashian filed the legal paperwork to end their seven-year marriage.

However, trouble in their marriage began years earlier – and now a new documentary titled Kim Vs Kanye: The Divorcehas pinpointed the two events that pushed the reality star to file for divorce.

In the two-part special which premiered on BINGE overnight, legal counsels who fought the case and other pivotal figures provide commentary on the high-profile split that was triggered by two “nail in the coffin” moments for Kardashian.

The first was West’s outburst at a rally in South Carolina in 2020 where he told the crowd, while discussing his pro-life stance, that his wife almost had an abortion when they fell pregnant with their eldest child North, now 10. They also share three other children: Saint, 7, Chicago, 5, and Psalm, 4.

“In terms of the public brand, Kris and Kim knew they had to cut Kanye lose,” one figure said in the documentary, referencing Kardashian’s mother and manager Kris Jenner.

The following day, West took his rant to social media in a series of tweets taking aim at both his wife and mother-in-law.

“Kim was trying to fly to Wyoming with a doctor to lock me up like on the movie Get Out because I cried about saving my daughter’s life yesterday,” West tweeted from their ranch in Wyoming, where he had been staying at the time.

“Kriss [sic] don’t play with me you … are not allowed around my children … Ya’ll tried to lock me up,” he wrote in a follow-up tweet.

Still, Kardashian stood by her man, showing her support for West and asking the public for compassion as he was living with bipolar disorder.

“I’ve never spoken publicly about how this has affected us at home because I am very protective of our children and Kanye’s right to privacy when it comes to his health,” Kardashian wrote in a statement shared on Instagram at the time.

“I kindly ask that the media and public give us the compassion and empathy that is needed so that we can get through this.”

However, according to the experts interviewed in the doco, these events were the last straw for Kardashian.

“The nail in the coffin for their marriage was Kanye going on Twitter and going against the family,” entertainment reporter Dax Holt said on camera, adding it was the tweet about Jenner wanting to “lock him up” that was the beginning of the end.

Elsewhere in the doco, it is claimed that West was portrayed in an unfavourable light on the family’s reality TV show, Keeping Up With the Kardashians, and over the years his appearances on the series got “darker and heavier”.

Social media writer, Natalie Franklin, said there was almost a “tactic to paint Kanye as this unstable person”.

“In America, it’s very easy to paint a black man as crazy or aggressive or offensive,” she said.

Added writer and commenter Zan Romanoff: “Kim is one of the most brand-managed people in the world. Initially protecting Kanye was part of the Kardashian brand … it then became apparent that wasn’t the case, so then they were like ‘OK, we’re going to show you in a different light because we need to protect ourselves.’”

Kim Vs Kanye: The Divorce is now streaming on BINGE.
