Without world number one Nelly Korda’s breathtaking, otherworldly streak of six wins in 2024, Australian star Hannah Green would be touted far more often as a potential winner of the US Open.

Green, who has already won two tournaments this year and is now ranked No. 5 in the world, said she had never been more confident going into a major tournament with a record $18 million prize pool and $3.6 million for the winner, which was a huge incentive to do her best.

But after facing Korda in the final round of the last LPGA event and losing by a single stroke after an errant drive on the 18th hole, Green knows the threat of a top-form Korda could end with her “probably beating us by quite a bit” at Lancaster Country Club.

Players at the Open have been bombarded with questions about Korda, who has won six of her last seven events and, according to Green, won some of them without even being at her best, making her a scary candidate with the most important trophy in women’s golf at stake.

“Yeah, it makes the game look very easy,” Green said.

“I played with her in Palos Verdes (in March) and didn’t make the (cut) weekend that week, but I don’t really know if she was really in the running,” Green said.

“I think she worked hard over the weekend, but she didn’t even play that well. She didn’t seem like she was a robot. She hit some shots that we all hit from time to time, but she just up and down and didn’t score too many points.

“So she made it look really easy, but she didn’t play really well. And the scarier thing is that when she’s at her best, she’s going to be at her best and she’s probably going to beat us by quite a bit.

“So our goal is to beat Nelly because if you beat her you’ll probably have the trophy in your hands.”

But the prospect of beating Korda doesn’t deter Green. She feels more comfortable on tour after her wedding than she has in recent seasons and has just found the best balance between on and off the golf course.

“I don’t think I’ve ever entered a major feeling more confident. I feel like I don’t have to work on myself too much going into a major, which is nice,” she said.

“It’s been pretty difficult for me, especially because of my inconsistency when it comes to winning a golf tournament, but I’m feeling really good and really excited this week.

“Yeah, I just feel really good this year. I don’t know what it is. A lot of people have said it’s because of the wedding, being married, not having to worry about wedding planning and things like that. But this year it just feels different.

“I don’t know what it is. I wish I could have that feeling every week when I tee off, but here in Lancaster it’s just very relaxing.”

Green is one of six Australians at the event, joined by Minjee Lee, Gabi Ruffels, Steph Kyriacou, Sarah Kemp and major debutante Keely Marx.
