The Lord of the Rings' Merry and Pippin explained
TWO Lord of the Rings book and film trilogy features four Hobbits as the main characters in the fight to defeat the Dark Lord Sauron. Fans of the books and movies probably remember Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee as the duo who traveled through Middle-earth to Mount Doom and destroyed the One Ring. However, some fans may have forgotten two other Hobbits who helped Frodo and Sam on their quest: Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took. The four Hobbits are childhood friends, but Merry and Pippin are the most troublesome of the bunch, although the wizard Gandalf the Gray is known for his pranks and thievery.
Merry and Pippin's fun-loving natures lead them to become intertwined in Frodo's quest to destroy the One Ring when they steal the produce of a local farmer and meet Frodo and Sam on the way to Pony Prancing. Once they joined the Fellowship, their subtlety diminished but still appeared during celebrations such as after the Battles of Helm's Deep and Isengard. However, their foolishness is still evident at key moments, including Pippin's awakening of the Goblins in the Mines of Moria and when they take the Palantir of Later he became Saruman. Merry is generally shown to be the smarter of her cousins.
The Feat and Legacy of Merry and Pippin
Despite their fun-loving and often foolish natures, both Merry and Pippin displayed great bravery in the War of the Ring. The two were able to convince the tree-like Ents to fight the evil wizard Saruman and attack Isengard. Pippin accompanies Gandalf to Gondor, helps defend the city from the Orcs, and rescues Faramir. Merry went with Eowyn to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields and helped defeat the king of Angmar. Both Hobbits later helped fight the last of Sauron's armies at the Battle of the Black Gate and even led the Battle of Bywater to free the Hobbit village from control of Saruman in the books.
Both Merry and Pippin were buried next to Aragorn when the heroes died in Gondor three years after the War of the Ring.
