Tradie’s chilling act after killing pregnant wife Arnima Hayat

A craftsman who murdered his pregnant wife in the fourth month of their marriage and poured acid on her body later had a creepy conversation with a friend in which he laughed about the young woman’s murder.

Meraj Zafar, an apprentice construction worker, has pleaded guilty to murdering 19-year-old Arnima Hayat in her North Parramatta apartment in western Sydney on January 29, 2022.

Before her death, Ms Hayat, a medical student at Western Sydney University, had expressed regret at having planned to marry Mr Zafar, then 20, to a friend.

The couple married in a secret Islamic ceremony in October 2021.

On the night of January 29, Ms. Hayat desperately texted a friend from university.

“I have no one but you,” wrote Ms. Hayat.

“You have no choice. You have to stay with him,” the friend replied.

In her last message at 9:10 p.m. she wrote: “No, I hate him.”

45 minutes later she was dead.

The facts of the case, presented to the Supreme Court of New South Wales this week, showed that Mr Zafar killed Ms Hayat “by applying pressure to her neck and/or suffocating her”, according to The Daily Telegraph.

The day after the murder, Mr Zafar drove to Bunnings in Northmead twice and purchased a total of 100 litres of hydrochloric acid.

According to the facts, after returning home, he poured the hydrochloric acid into the bathtub and placed Ms. Hayat’s body in the tub “in an attempt to dispose of Ms. Hayat’s remains.”

On January 30, the craftsman searched the Internet five times for keywords including: “Can hydrochloric acid penetrate skin?” and “How many years do you get for murder in Sydney?”

That day he called his mother and told her that Mrs. Hayat was not breathing.

She advised him to call an ambulance, but he refused, saying: “The police will catch me and put me in jail.”

During the conversation, Mr. Zafar asked her how much an international ticket would cost.

His mother called the emergency services, whereupon the police forcibly entered the apartment.

Ms. Hayat’s naked body was discovered in the bathtub. Her body was so decomposed by the acid that her immediate family could not recognize her.

“Ms. Hayat was lying face down, her face hidden and twisted in half,” the facts state.

“There was a strong, overwhelming chemical smell in the air and police evacuated the apartment due to the unhealthy air quality coming from the enclosed bathroom.”

According to the facts, one day before his arrest, Mr. Zafar was sitting in his car and told a friend, “I just killed someone, I swear to God I killed someone,” while laughing.

Later, on January 31, he turned himself in to the police.

It was not the first time that Mr Zafar had been violent towards his wife.

Mrs. Hayat had previously complained to friends about her husband’s violence, but she did not report it to the police. The age reports.

In May 2021, Ms. Hayat fell unconscious when Mr. Zafar placed his hands around her neck.

Ms. Hayat suffered bruising on her neck, chest, left wrist, left arm and thigh.

Mr Zafar will appear in court again on August 5 for sentencing.
