‘Top 2 or 3’: Wayne Bennett’s wild claim as Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow’s 100m try leaves NRL in disbelief

The rugby world went collectively mad when one of the most absurd tries of the year resulted in Dolphins fullback Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow running almost 100 metres to score the game-winning try for his team.

The Dolphins claimed their first win in Sydney on Thursday night with a thrilling 30-28 victory over the Cronulla Sharks after Nicho Hynes failed to level the score with a sideline conversion after the final whistle.

Before the Sharks turned up the heat, the Dolphins got off to a rapid start and led 22-0 after 25 minutes.

After taking the lead with 27 minutes left in the game, Will Kennedy shot past Tabuai-Fidow to increase the lead to 24-22.

It looked like the Sharks had overwhelmed the Dolphins – until a magical moment at the National Rugby League left everyone open-mouthed.

After Tabuai-Fidow defused a bomb that was supposed to stop the Dolphins on their own line, the fullback got to work.

With no path ahead of him, Tabuai-Fidow ran backwards toward his own line, shook off Sharks connector Brayden Trindall and then took off running.

Tabuai-Fidow did not let Ronaldo Mulitalo down and used his pace to get around him, denying Kennedy’s last-ditch attempt.

“This could be one of the greats,” shouted Fox League’s Dan Ginnane. “We just witnessed a moment of absolute genius.”

He added that it was “an attempt for the ages” and called it “one of the individual attempts of the season”.

Speaking on Channel 9, Phil Gould said: “This is why kids fall in love with footballers.

“It’s just unbelievable – and that’s talking about treating your opponent fairly. Kennedy comes up to him and Hamiso does exactly what Kennedy did to him a few moments ago at the other end of the field.”

Cameron Smith said: “That’s also pure talent – it’s not something you learn.”

It was such a good attempt that super coach Wayne Bennett even gave him the ultimate compliment.

“It’s in the top two or three, Steve Renouf made a try that I’ll never forget and I’ll never forget this one,” Bennett said.

“We are very lucky to have him.”

Kodi Nikorima added: “This can only be Hammer.”

Sharks coach Craig Fitzgibbon said his team missed the start but recovered.

But he added: “One moment with Hammer and the game is over.”

Fitzgibbon said some of his players could have made the tackle, but he did not want to make any excuses for the third defeat in four games.

The fans were equally overwhelmed.

One fan called it: “The moment the Sharks lost this game.”

ABC’s Michael Doyle said: “It’s hard to put into words how good this try was from Hamiso Tabuai-Fidow. A try worth any win, let alone the @dolphinsnrl’s first Sydney triumph.”

Roy Ward of The Age commented: “Please Dolphins, now that Hammer has pulled off that magical try, wrap him in cotton wool until Origin at the MCG. We need to see the big man on the People’s Square! What a brilliant run!”

SEN producer Nathan Brookes posted: “Oh my God… This is awesome!”

Nine Radio’s Andrew Lucas said: “Oh, the hammer running all over the field, what a sight. One of the tries of the season for sure.”

Lachlan Jeffrey of the Western Weekender added: “There are few better sights than the hammer in open space.”

Another fan argued: “The Hammer is a better player than Reece Walsh and if QLD wants to close out the series, Billy should play him at fullback in game 2.”

Another fan claimed: “That hammer attempt completely changed the game.”

Another said: “Hammer played against the U15s and looked very average.”
