The fight between Tim Tszyu and Virgil Orgil is cancelled.

The Australian was scheduled to fight the undefeated American on August 3, but Californian doctors had to intervene and stop the fight.

Tszyu’s promoter No Limit confirmed on Friday morning that Tszyu had been asked to retire following a serious head injury sustained in his title fight loss to Sebastian Fundora in March.

UFC 302: MAKHACHEV VS. POIRIER | SUNDAY, JUNE 2 | Order now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. Main Event on Kayo Sports and Foxtel is the exclusive home of UFC Pay-Per-View.

“We are bitterly disappointed with the setback and Tim is extremely frustrated after a great pre-camp with Kostya,” said George Rose, CEO of No Limit.

“He showed everyone that he would fight through anything against Fundora, but honestly that decision was made for him. Ultimately, it was his body and the doctors that told him he wasn’t ready.”

The same Californian doctors have ordered Tszyu not to take part in sparring for another six weeks. He was already suspended for medical reasons by the Nevada State Athletic Commission until May 15 following his fight in Las Vegas.

This is another heavy blow for the 29-year-old this year, as his rematch for the world title with Fundora was already cancelled under cruel circumstances.

Tszyu’s career was already taking a new direction after the WBO announced that American pound-for-pound king Terence Crawford would next fight Fundora for the super welterweight crown.

WBO officials announced last month that Crawford’s scheduled Aug. 3 fight against WBA champion Israil Madrimov would be for the interim WBO title, with the winner facing Fundora later this year.

Tsyu’s blockbuster with Ortiz was booked as the co-main event on the packed Crawford-Madrimov schedule in Los Angeles.

For the “Soul Taker” there is now suddenly no clear path back to the world championship fight – at least not before 2025.

Tszyu’s bold decision to turn his attention to Ortiz – an undefeated fighter – was widely praised but also described as dangerous.

Ortiz, a former welterweight champion, moved up to the super welterweight division after devastating every opponent he faced in the lower weight class.

He has a perfect record of 20-0, with all 20 wins coming by knockout.

According to ESPNOrtiz will continue to fight on the Crawford card, a replacement opponent will be organized.

It was an extraordinary series of unfortunate events for Tszyu, who could have easily defended his title against Fundora had he not accidentally suffered a deep cut to his forehead with an elbow in round 2.

If Tszyu’s camp had stopped the fight before the fourth round, the Sydney native could have gotten away with a no contest verdict.

The ringside doctor examined Tszyu’s head twice during the fight and both times allowed the fight to continue.

After the Fundora fight, Rose insisted that there was a rematch clause for Tszyu to face the “Thundering Inferno” again. But when Crawford came on the scene, that so-called agreement ultimately meant nothing.

In April, there were suggestions that Tszyu might still try to bring his next fight back to Australia, with reports that the New South Wales and Queensland state governments were willing to offer big money to have Tszyu’s next fight in Sydney or Brisbane.

With no belt on the line, it seems unlikely that Tszyu will have the luxury of fighting on home soil any time soon.
