The worst card in Pokemon Pocket's Mythical Island Mini-Set

SUMMARY

  • The Drednaw failed due to its strange development, high energy cost and lackluster side effects.

  • Galvantula struggles to find a place in Lightning-Type decks, offering disruptive play or little utility.

  • The new variant of Primeape falls short of the old version, lacking damage and synergy with popular decks.

Excludes special illustrations and other rare varieties, Pokemon PocketMythical Islands introduced 68 new and updated cards, with Mew ex being the featured one. The mini-set has generally been well-received, and players seem happy with its impact on the metagame, encouraging more creative deck building. However, not all cards in the Mythical Isles expansion hit him. In fact, some have been so disappointed with Pokemon that they may be forgotten in a few months. Here is a list of “not so good” cards from it Pokemon PocketThe Mythical Island mini-set.

Pokemon TCG Pocket: Best Full Art Cards, No

These full art cards in Pokemon Pocket deserve the trophy for the most beautiful design of the current expansion pack, Genetic Apex.

The terms of the list

  • Skills and results: One of the main criteria for this ranking is the text, effect and damage of the cards. Cards with average abilities or high energy attacks are considered to be poor.
  • Synergy with current META decks: Cards with little or no synergy with the best deck or no new synergy are ranked lower.
  • Fanbase welcome: General comments about the cards in the Mythical Isles expansion also affected these rankings.

There can be a case for protecting all of these Pokemon when used in the right deck and played at the right time. However, the following list focuses on their overall performance, ignoring the “conditional performance” of each card.

6

Dreadnaw

Disadvantages: Low average attack ROI

Drednaw in pokemon tcg pocket.

The introduction of cards like Vaporeon into Mythical Island and the rise of Gyarados ex can give the illusion that there is more room for cards like Drednaw. However, this is just excessive optimism. Drednaw has not found a place in the current metagame for a number of reasons — all listed below:

  1. Drednaw is a Stage One Pokemon. Players have to spend time and effort to design it, which is not worth it in most META Water-Type decks.
  2. Drednaw requires three water energy. In exchange, it only takes 70 damage and has a “chance” to drop one Energy on the opponent's Active Pokemon. This is not a tempting bargain.
  3. Drednaw does not like Retreat. Even if the player uses the Drednaw's Leaf, it still requires one extra Energy to retreat, due to the three-Energy Retreat cost.

5

Galvantula

Disadvantages: Inconsistent with Archetype

Galvantula is facing an existential crisis Pokemon PocketCurrently META. One might wonder why it was created in the first place, as the Lightning-Type archetype has no room for this Pokemon. That said, fans have managed to build some weird decks with Galvantula, a deck that can frustrate opponents into early submissions. But is that enough to redeem Galvantula's status? Not really.

The problem is that Galvantula is either a game changer or just an annoying card to confuse the opponent. There is no real middle ground, which is disappointing. Although the Pokemon provides consistent damage and effects, it's not the best choice for Lightning-Type decks, which is why it's on this list.

4

Primeape

Disadvantages: Debuffed attacks

primeape in pokemon tcg pocket.

The new Primeape is one of the strangest cards in the Mythical Isles expansion. A debuffed variant that begs the question: why do players choose this one over the Genetic Apex version? This new variant has over 50 damage for both Fighting-Type energy, providing more consistency. But the fact is that the Genetic Apex Primeape deals 40 damage for the same energy cost, has 10 more HP, and, most importantly, can kill its attack at 60 (deals 100 damage in total).

What's worse for the new Primeape is that the old variant is highly sought after in the current META as a reliable opponent to Druddigon. And since Druddigon has grown in popularity, there is little reason for players to choose Mythical Island Primeape over Genetic Apex.

3

Ponyta

Cons: Added RNG

On the face of it, Ponyta in Mythical Island seems to be an improvement or an upgrade. However, the real downside to playing this variant comes into play when players do the math. If an attack does 40 damage but has only a 50% chance of hitting, the damage is the same as a guaranteed 20 attack. This is because the expected damage is calculated as 40 × 0.5 = 20.

Some may argue that Mythical Island's Ponyta works hand in hand with the new Rapidash, as they both incorporate RNG risk with potential rewards. However, what is clear there Pokemon PocketThe META until now has been a deck focused on small pushers often struggling to do well in high-level competitive games, where consistency is very important. Therefore, even if there is synergy between the two new cards, it is unnecessary.

2

Flores

Disadvantages: Awkward Synergies

florges in pokemon tcg pocket.

Florges is an interesting case. On paper, the premise looks promising: a Pokemon that can occupy the Active Spot for a while and heal teammates on the Bench. With Florges as a Psychic type and the recent addition of Mew ex and Budding Expeditioner, it looks set to be a success. Theoretically, Florges can heal a Retreated Pokemon while Mew ex returns to the hand and heals itself using Budding Expeditioner — a win-win situation. However, this is not often the case.

The main problem is that Florges is a Stage Two Pokemon, which hinders its effectiveness. Mewtwo ex decks are already slow due to Gardevoir's Evolution line. Adding Florges to this already crowded lineup makes it even worse. When Florges is ready, the opponent will most likely put their first DPS on the Active Spot, and the Pokemon will probably be shot by one Florges after one turn.

1

Slurpuff

What's wrong: It doesn't matter

slurpuff in pokemon tcg pocket.

Slurpuff is the worst card in the Mythical Islands expansion. It's almost impossible to find or collect META-friendly items that can benefit from this Pokemon. Slurpuff is a Stage One Psychic-Type that deals 60 damage with one Psychic and colorless energy. And that's about it.

The only good thing for Slurpuff is its weakness to Steel. Right now, the metagame has a strong Steel-Type lineup that can take advantage of this. But this was not enough to strengthen his position. It's hard to imagine a future where Slurpuff plays a major role in the META. But only time will tell.
