It was later revealed that Felassan was working for a larger being, and was tasked with procuring the passcode for the eluvians. Because of his experiences with Briala, and his love for the people of Thedas, he chose to defy Solas' orders and refused to give him access to the network. In response, Solas kills one of his most trusted servants and allies.
Solas's decision to kill Felassan was made even more heartbreaking when he saw them fighting the Evanuris together. The fact that Felassan remained loyal to Solas even after thousands of years, and chose to oppose him simply because of his convictions, speaks to the strength of his character and morals. The fact that Felassan was such a big part of Solas's regret, that he was portrayed as a powerful revenant in Crossroads, meant that Solas was thinking about how their relationship was deteriorating, and what he did to his old friend.
