Singer reveals six-month Kanye West ordeal

Singer Kacy Hill has spoken about the six-month ordeal she says she had to go through to break away from Kanye West’s record label.

Speaking on stage at a recent concert, The American indie singer and songwriter admitted that she had to go to extreme lengths to get away from West’s label Good Music.

Hill had released her debut album Like a woman on the label in 2017. Despite good reviews, it failed to make it into the charts.

She explained that when preparations were underway for the release of her second album, people at the label – an offshoot of music industry giant Def Jam – got cold feet and were unsure if they wanted to go ahead with the release. She responded that she was fine with it too and would happily leave the record label.

There was a problem, however. Without West’s consent, the two parties could not part ways amicably, she was told.

“I thought, no problem. But at the time he decided he didn’t want to use email and he didn’t have an assistant,” Hill revealed about the notoriously unpredictable rapper, mogul and occasional presidential candidate.

Knowing she had to face West in person, Hill went to the only place she thought she could find him: his weekly Sunday Service religious gatherings in Los Angeles.

She went…and went, for about six months. Hill explained that attending the gospel concerts was “like going to a wedding with a contract in your hand.”

She said she repeatedly approached West at events, asked him for a business meeting, and was met with only a shrug of the shoulders.

Eventually, she said, West told her to “come to rehearsal on Friday.” There were no further instructions, so she went to his office in Calabasas on the day of the rehearsal. He was there and asked her why she had come.

She finally had the opportunity to explain her predicament to him and tell him that she had to be released from her recording contract with Good Music.

“He said, ‘Okay, what do I need to do?’ I said, ‘You can literally text anyone and tell them I’m done,’ and he did.”

The deal was perfect, and all it took was six months of Sunday service. It was a happy ending for Hill, who has since released three more albums, two of them solo and her latest on boutique record label Nettwerk.

Times seem to be tougher for Good Music. Although the band once boasted artists like John Legend, Mos Def, Pusha T, Big Sean and many others, they now have only two artists under their belt.

Last year, a 2018 video leaked online in which West harshly criticized the record label during a phone call with former manager Scooter Braun, demanding that Braun “get me out of this damn GOOD music shit right now.”

“I have to get rid of the GOOD music because I’m great. And guess what’s good? The enemy of great,” he said.
