Rescue workers are desperately searching for people believed to be trapped in a block of flats in western Sydney that “exploded”, sending rubble and debris flying across the street.

Just before 1pm on Saturday, emergency services were called to Waikanda Cres in Whalan after reports that the second floor of the building had “erupted”.

A Fire and Rescue NSW spokesman said rescue workers were still searching the rubble for several people believed to be missing from the house.

Several people had already been evacuated from the property, two of whom were taken to Mt Druitt Hospital in an unknown condition.

A NSW Ambulance spokesman said two more patients were believed to have been taken to the hospital in western Sydney, but this had not yet been confirmed.

The explosion on Saturday around midday triggered a mammoth operation by the emergency services.

At least 12 FRNSW units were still on site, along with ambulance crews, including rescue teams, hazardous materials teams and aircraft.

Locals took to social media after reports of a loud bang in the area.

“I was in my front yard in Lethbridge Park and I felt and heard it,” said one local.
