SUMMARY
- The PS Placeable mod turns your PSP into a console.
- Enables Bluetooth control, connected to TV.
- Maintain access to UMD vehicles, giving a second life to old games.
A talented gamer has created a mod that turns a PSP handheld into a home system. The change is amazing, giving PSP players the ability to use a Bluetooth controller with the system and easily connect it to a TV or other screen.
The PSP, also known as the PlayStation Portable, was Sony's entry into the handheld market in an attempt to compete with the likes of Nintendo. Although the device has seen several iterations and successes, its controller, the PS Vita, did not perform as well as its predecessor and was finally discontinued after the Nintendo Switch appeared on the market. However, there are many out there who still love their PSPs, and for those players this might be a mod to check out.

Burnout fans are making interesting discoveries in PSP cases
A Burnout fan makes a rare discovery of an old copy of the PSP spinoff Burnout Dominator, revealing an interesting part of the game's history.
Retro Mod Works has introduced a way to turn your PSP into a console. Called PS Placeable, the mod places the PlayStation Portable in a miniature version of the PS2 that can be easily connected to a TV. Even a PSP with a broken screen can be used this way, giving the system a second life when it might otherwise be thrown away. The setup also allows the user to use a Bluetooth controller with the PSP, instead of having to use the body as a controller when connected to the TV.
PS Placeable makes UMD realizable
One of the main reasons behind the creation of Retro Mod Works seems to be that modders don't like digital games and the “need” to buy a second copy of a game one already owns. Although many PSP games have been ported to other systems over the years, the proprietary UMD format cannot be used on modern systems. PS Placeable maintains access to the UMD drive, so users can simply pop in all their games and enjoy them all over again.
Retro Mod Works offers two ways to get PS Placeable; a basic kit that allows users to build their own, or a complete kit with the PSP already installed and configured. PS Placeable seems to be very popular, as the full version with PSP included is sold out, and the build kit is on pre-order due to high demand. The kit varies in price from $39.99 – $69.99 depending on the parts the user needs, while the complete setup costs $274.99. Considering the original PSP was sold for $249, it seems like a good deal for fans of the system. Those who already have a PSP and do not want to build their own can contact a modder, who is ready to install a PSP client in the device.
Although the PlayStation Portable is currently out, there are rumors that a new handheld PlayStation is in the works. Fans will have to wait and see if such a device exists, but for those who want to dust off the original PSP, this mod seems to be the ticket.
PSP
The PSP, or PlayStation Portable, marks Sony's first jump into the handheld gaming space, which is often dominated by Nintendo. Their compact system included a small disc and featured a few PSP exclusive titles during their run. Its direct competitor was the Nintendo DS during the seventh generation console war.
