Pokemon Trading Card Game Pocket's Damage Cap
Shared on Reddit, a player named Lonk_From_Hirool showed how they got the maximum damage possible in a single round-990.
The player's Alakazam is dealing with a Moltres breakdown that has 37 fire energy attached to it. The Moltres ex opponent sat on the bench, gathering energy from the other Moltres ex who used the power gathering move Inferno Dance.
While in most cases, having 37 energy in a Pokemon in the TCG is useless, in this case, it played into Lonk's hands. Alakazam's Psychic does 60 damage, plus 30 for all Energy associated with the opponent's Active Pokemon. Just 37 energy meant that Alakazam took 1,110 damage, added 60 bases to the attack, and Moltres ex should have hit 1,170. But actually it only hit a measly 990, which means the game has a hard cap on the amount of damage a Pokemon can take.
It is possible that this cap, found by Lonk, who must have played with himself to test his theory, sits at 999, but since the Pokemon resolves damage by ten, it is surrounded by That's 990.
It's useless information, because you'll probably never get it, but it's nice to know.
