Minecraft is, without a doubt, one of the most accessible games ever made, and not just in terms of gameplay. Since its debut in 2011, Mojang Studios' sandbox game has been ported to almost everything under the sun, from Xbox 360, New Nintendo 3DS, and Wii U to Raspberry Pi , Windows Phone, and even Apple TV. One of the lesser known versions of the Minecrafthowever, is its PlayStation VR port. Despite being owned by rival console maker Microsoft, the game has been brought to Sony's VR headset as part of a free update, giving the PS4 version a bonus feature not available in the Xbox One port of the title. Using PSVR for Minecraft was added in September 2020, about four years after the peripheral's launch and just a few months before the PlayStation 5 was released.
NA Minecraft has been available on the PlayStation VR for just a few years now, official support for the peripheral is about to end. Earlier this month, Mojang quietly announced weekly Minecraft changelog that the PSVR version of the game will no longer be updated after March 2025. To make matters worse, the developer also noted that Minecraft will become completely unplayable on Sony's first VR headset when this version is not supported. Mojang's decision to remove this important feature from the PlayStation port of Minecraft is very disappointing for PSVR owners, and it also raises the question of whether or not the block survival game will make its way to the struggling PSVR2.
Possible PSVR2 port of Minecraft is up in the air after PSVR support ends
The PlayStation VR2 hasn't been a huge success so far for a variety of reasons
The PlayStation VR2 had a lot of hype leading up to its release, but it didn't work out for Sony. Although the $600 peripheral has been on the market until February 2023, reports suggest that only about 600,000 units have been sold. By comparison, the original PSVR sold around 5 million units in three years, a far greater number than Sony's current virtual reality headset. Much of PSVR2's slow adoption rate can be attributed to three key factors: the lack of compatibility support from the original PSVR1, the higher price tag than that of the basic PS5, and a limited library of exclusives.
When it comes to first-party content, meanwhile, Sony has barely supported the headset. The only marquee title released by the Japanese console maker for the PSVR2 so far is Horizon: Call of the Mountains. Admittedly, Sony has released a few other titles for its high-end peripherals, such as Gran Turismo 7 and the poor are welcomed Firewall Ultrabut that's what it is.
PSVR2 is supported by third-party releases, but fans want more
PlayStation VR2's first-party support may be lacking, but the virtual reality headset still has a huge fan following despite it. Various third-party VR games are released for the PSVR2 peripheral every month, however, and many of them look and play better thanks to the PSVR2's eye controls, the 4K tablet Two OLED, and smooth control. However, many fans have asked for higher quality games to be installed on the headset, with Minecraft to be their leader.
A PSVR2 port of Minecraft seems unlikely, in large part because of its installation base
Unfortunately, given the information that is supported by PSVR Minecraft completely removed from the PS4/5 version of the game, the chances of Mojang's popular sandbox title coming to PSVR2 seem slimmer than ever. Although the developers may abandon the PSVR to prioritize the development for Sony's current virtual reality headset, the fact that they did not indicate such a thing seems unlikely. Due to the limited installation of the PlayStation VR2, perhaps Mojang and Microsoft do not think it is worth investing in a port for the headset, especially considering the more difficult nature of VR game development. But hopefully, Mojang will surprise the fans and reveal the PSVR2 version Minecraft in a low place.
