2024 will be the 15th anniversary of two of the most popular anime series, Steins; gate SY Monogatari. The two series seem to have nothing in common at first glance, except for fantasy/sci-fi animation, and have become timeless successes. However, it did not prevent the new series from announcing a very unexpected collaboration, which will come this year.

The news first teased the Steins; gate X official page (formerly Twitter) on September 12. Then, a more official announcement came on YouTube last week, which announced an anniversary collaboration event happening between the two series. There will be three distinct parts of the collaboration celebration – an event at Tokyo Tower, a themed cafe, and a special pop-up shop.

Steins; gate first aired in 2011, from April to September with 24 episodes. The anime series has various spin-offs, including a video game and a sequel titled Steins; Gate: Oukoubakko no Poriomania. Steins; gate holds an impressive MyAnimeList score of 9.07, ranking 3rd all-time on the site. Although he didn't go on for many more seasons, his legacy lives on through his dedicated fans and high quality.

Monogatarion the other hand, it is the name of a series of cartoons that include Monogatari Series: The First Season, Monogatari Series: The Second Season, Monogatari Series: The Final Season, Monogatari Series: The Endless Season, SY Monogatari Series: Season Monster (which is currently running). The first time this collaboration was revealed through the Steins: Gate Account X, unclear at best. That didn't stop fans from picking up on the clues left in the post less than 24 hours after it was originally posted, and speculation about the collaboration began. The day after the mysterious post, Stephanie LIu of Siliconera reported this translation and interpretation:


The tweet in question reads like Okabe is saying this, saying the operation is going well. Then, the speaker got emotional with some emojis. After they recover, they say this is an alternative to Steins Gate and end the message with El Psy Kongroo, which is how Okabe usually ends his phone calls.

The emojis in the Tweet are a crab, a snail, a monkey, a snake, a cat, a flower, and then two vampires. The emojis in this sequence seem to refer to the light novel series Monogatari. In Monogatari, the main character Koyomi Araragi helps the girls she meets at school or around town with problems related to a magical oddity. In Hitagi Crab, he helps his classmate and future girlfriend Hitagi Senjogahara from a crab that stole his weight. Then, in Mayoi Mai Mai (Snail), he helps a lost girl named Mayoi Hachikuji return home. And so on and so forth.

They were right, and a little over a month later the official event was announced. The trailer for it on YouTube is just over a minute long, so no details have been released at this point. What has been announced, however, is that there will be a special event at Tokyo Tower, with the Animax Café, which will take place in mid-October 2024. In addition, there will be a special pop-up shop in mid-November 2024.


Although the official details have not yet been released, it is possible to speculate based on past events similar to what could be obtained. Previous animation events at Tokyo Tower have included character cuts and photo opportunities for fans, often with the Tokyo skyline behind them, with items -Special commercials featuring characters and Tokyo Tower. An Animax Cafe is sure to have a special menu that is themed after the anime, along with more exclusive merchandise. And finally, the pop-up shop will be just that – lots of stuff to buy!

Because the promotional video features characters from both Steins: Gate SY Monogatari wear each other, may share the same items.
