Meta’s new Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses review

I managed to get my hands on Australia’s hottest new technology product.

Here are my thoughts on the new Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses.

What’s new

Readers may remember Meta’s first attempt at smart glasses: Ray-Ban Stories.

As I wrote back in 2021, the stylish sunglasses were equipped with a pretty good camera and audio system and offered good value for money.

The new Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses are the next generation.

You can still take photos and videos, make phone calls and listen to music with the glasses. They are simply much better in almost every way.

First, they’re lighter, which is a big deal. The designers had to cram a lot of gear into the goggles, including the camera and audio system. The new design is noticeably lighter, which makes the goggles much more comfortable on the nose.

Another big improvement is the audio upgrades.

The camera is also better. There is now an ultra-wide 12MP camera and a five-microphone system.

Using voice commands, you can take photos and videos and also go live on Facebook and Instagram.

The battery life has been improved. A full charge lasts up to 36 hours. The charging process takes place in an elegant case.

Meta has released a number of different colors and designs including Wayfarer, Skyler and Headliner.

The new “Skyler” style frames were announced by Meta in April 2024 and are now available in Australia.

The best thing about the glasses is the ability to use Meta AI and query what you’re looking at. For example, you can look at a landmark and say, “Hey Meta, what do I see?” and you’ll get a response. The uses are almost endless and include translating foreign signs and helping you write captions.

This technology is being rolled out in the US and Canada – and is not available in Australia… yet.

When it happens, it will be great and especially helpful for people with visual impairments.

My experience

I recently vacationed in the Davao region of the Philippines and documented some of my experiences using my glasses.

It was hot, dusty and humid – every day the mercury rose above 40 degrees – but the glasses survived.

As I traveled through the incredibly lush mountains and stunning white beaches and ate delicious Filipino delicacies, I always had the glasses with me.

I found it was a great way to show my friends and family a perspective on the Philippines – almost exactly the same as I saw it.

Thanks to the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, I was also able to keep my kids under control and take snapshots at the same time.

Thanks to the new camera on the Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses, most of the photos and videos were sharp – even though I was careful to stay still while taking the snapshots.

However, I noticed that the pictures didn’t turn out so well in very low light because there was no flash.

I even took the goggles swimming when I visited the garden island of Samal and the waterproof lenses remained undamaged.

Additionally, just like the old design, there is a recording LED light that alerts others that you are using the camera, preventing anyone from using the camera secretly.

What they are good for

For people who need prescription glasses, the new Ray-Ban Meta Smart Glasses are a great way to add more technology to your life.

You can sit comfortably on the train and talk to someone. A microphone picks up your voice and the loudspeaker directs the noise to your ears so that no one can overhear you.

You can also connect to Messenger, WhatsApp and your phone and use voice control to send and receive messages, with messages read aloud to you.

I also used the glasses to listen to music.

For everyone else, they are best suited as sunglasses – again with all the advantages of data glasses.

Prices start at $449, cheaper than most cell phones. The glasses are available at meta.com and ray-ban.com.

I think the glasses are a big win for consumers. I was impressed with how Meta was able to make some big improvements while maintaining the stylish look and low price.
