Marvel's comics should have learned something from X-Men '97

There's a lot to like X-Men '97. These days, reboots are very common, but more often than not, they don't stick around. X-Men '97however, does. The show expands on the original X-Men: The Animated Series. Now the world of television has changed, the show is not limited to episodic. Relationships can evolve, and narratives can hint at things to come.

However, what fans are most excited about is the show's beautiful animation. X-Men '97 uses a method that takes heavy inspiration from the original series, making it look like a review. That is, as technology has improved since the 90s, new displays use both 2D methods and 3D techniques, which give the display a brighter appearance.

In contrast, other Marvel animated shows have a similar look to them. The future Eyes of Wakanda SY What if… both have very similar styles. Spider-Man around you friend is a bit more unique, with a flat style and graphics inspired by comic books. However, no one was excited to watch these shows the way they were X-Men '97. While it could be said that nostalgia is a big factor, this show is still unique compared to the current Marvel series. Considering how many animated shows are out there, Marvel should take it X-Men '97 and change things stylistically.

X-Men '97 takes on the character's old-school style

Animation, like any other medium, has its trends and styles over the decades. The 70's saw traditional cel animation mixed with the beginnings of realistic human characters. These cartoons had reduced budgets and limited animation. The likes of Hanna-Barbera Scooby-Doo, where are you? SY Jabberjaw is a classic example of this method.

The 80's saw more of a push towards the superhero side of trying to sell toys, due to the likes of He-Man & Master of the Universe SY GI Joe. Later, the 90s saw the rise of designer-driven cartoons. These cartoons were made in response to the limited animation that came before them, and are more exaggerated and fluid. Rugrats SY The Simpsons was a standout show this season.

The original was released in 1992 X-Men: The Animated Series shortly before this change. The show had a limited budget and stuck to the style of its 80s predecessors. The artistic choices mimicked the style of the original series. X-Men '97 not just to appeal to nostalgia, but also to embrace a style of exercise that hasn't been widely seen in decades. Along with taking inspiration from the original show, the creative team also took some ideas from the anime of the 80s and 90s, such as Ninja Scrolls. As a result, audiences find it refreshing in the modern world of television.

X-Men '97 takes on new techniques

That is, the technique involved in this visual exercise method has been updated. Instead of a typical cel animation with a tight budget, X-Men '97 uses more advanced 2D animation and takes full advantage of its Disney-level budget. Instead of choosing to mimic the limited animation style of the original, the creative team chose to evoke more of the 90s feel by using VHS output. (It's also a rare case that elements from VHS aren't intended to evoke fear in a horror setting.) Helping to enhance the perception that this is a '90s show, not something that came out in 2024. Producer and director Jake Castorena said the creative team was very careful about how they wanted to strike a balance between bringing the old style to life and keeping it relevant to modern audiences. Judging by the response from the fans, it appears that they have succeeded in spades. The show appeals to nostalgia for longtime fans, but it doesn't feel like a tired rehash.

Like WandaVision have tried to use different sitcom approaches for decades, the animation team at Marvel should try to create a very unique visual for their shows as well. X-Men '97with its retro look, it has proven that the audience likes visual shows that break the norm. Other creative performances, such as Moon Girl and Devil Dinosauralso show that is not limited to X-Men '97; animation design is good. Marvel has a cavalcade of classic characters, many of which have been recreated multiple times. Why not take a bold risk and mix things up? A breath of fresh air can renew the interest of long-time fans, and even newcomers.
