Clean-up operations are underway following a weekend of severe weather that saw the roof of a rural pub ripped off and millions of people left inundated by heavy rain.

Two people were taken to hospital after a severe storm ripped the roof off the Parade Hotel in Bunbury, south of Perth, on Sunday.

Previously, only one tornado had appeared in the region, destroying nine houses and damaging 16 others.

“This is the second time in a month that we have been hit by a traumatic weather event that has damaged homes and businesses,” said Don Punch, MP for Bunbury.

“Our thanks go once again to all the volunteers and employees of our aid organizations who helped the people affected by the storm.”

The stormy weather eased on Monday morning and one or two showers are forecast for Perth before heavier rain returns from Thursday.

On the east coast, more than 90mm of rain drenched Sydney on Saturday, forcing the closure of the popular cultural event Vivid.

The storms had now largely subsided, although minor flood warnings were still in effect for Wollombi Brook near Bulga and Mill Dam Falls.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned that the respite may be short-lived, with rainfall of up to 35mm forecast from Wednesday and into the long weekend.

Widespread rainfall also failed to materialise, clouding the situation in the country’s ski resorts: snowfall was recorded in Thredbo and Perisher in NSW and in Hotham in Victoria.

The Thredbo Resort reported 5 cm of fresh snow overnight from Monday to Monday, “plus a thin layer of snow right down to the village.”

Across the border, images released from Hotham Alpine Resort on Monday showed the popular winter sport covered in a thick layer of snow overnight.

This comes as many of the country’s ski resorts prepare to open over the long weekend, including Perisher, Lake Mountain Alpine Resort and Mt Buller.

Melbourne has been spared the worst of the rain, but is expected to experience up to 1mm of rainfall and highs of 16°C throughout the week, according to BOM.

Meanwhile, Adelaide is forecast to have highs of 18°C with no rain, while Hobart will remain mostly cloudy with showers, with highs reaching 16°C on Tuesday.

Further north, Canberra is expected to see highs of 17°C on Saturday, while Brisbane, also spared from the rain further south, could see highs of 22°C on Wednesday.
