How to command groups in Thronefall?

In ThronefallYour unit is smart, and automatically attacks nearby enemies. However, the soldiers have no commander can create gaps that the enemy can exploit. For example, Racers always go to the castle, and they will ignore all other structures in your kingdom. Since the castle is the center of your kingdom, you don't want to leave it unprotected. If the castle falls, it's game overso make sure it is well protected.

You can prepare for these situations by commanding your group and ordering them to hold positions in important places, such as walls, camps and castles. However, it can be difficult to figure out how to consistently command groups and get them to hold positions, and if you find yourself in a similar situation, the following guide should come in handy.

How Unit Commanding works in Thronefall

Thronefall - Command group

When commanding a group in Thronefall, a small circle appears around your character and any units within that circle will follow your character. These groups can be directed to strategic areas of your state, such as exposed structures, chokepoints, or act as a second line of defense if the first line fails.

You can command by pressing “R” on the keyboard or square/Y on the controller. This action will cause all soldiers in a circle to circle around your character, indicating that they have been ordered and are awaiting further orders. Commanded units will follow your character, but they cannot attack if you don't choose the Commander perk after upgrading the castle for the second time.

You can press “R” on the keyboard or square/Y on the controller to issue commands to your troops. Doing so will cause the soldiers to stay where you left them, but they can move at will if they see an enemy nearby. Holding down “R” or square/Y will command the unit to hold position. When the group was ordered to hold a specific position, he will remain there until you operate on him again, then the war will end, or he will die and be born again.

You can also use shortcuts to command specific units or even entire armies:

  • Command all the troops: Press “1” on the keyboard or R3 on the controller.
  • Command all battles: Press “2” on the keyboard or swipe the analog stick right to left on the controller.
  • All orders: Press “3” on the keyboard or click the right analog stick on the controller.
  • All hereos command: Press “4” on the keyboard or swipe the right analog stick on the controller.
  • Order a group type: Press “F” on the keyboard or circle/B on the controller.

Why should you command a group in Thronefall?

Flails and Archers take place in Thronefall.

Although you can rely on your troops to protect nearby structures, Commanding them allows you to organize future battles. Since the game predicts the number of enemies, you can command your troops to hold key positions and slow down the attackers' progress towards the castle.

As mentioned before, upgrading your castle for the second time allows you to choose the Commander perk, which allows the troops you command to attack while following your lead. In addition, Command troops move 60% faster and when asked to take a place, these soldiers get 20% more HP. These benefits are compelling reasons to take a more active role in commanding your unit Thronefall.
