Home Alone star ‘felt bad’ for Macaulay Culkin during filming

We always appreciate Hollywood memories, and actor Daniel Stern, whose autobiographical book Home Alone came out on May 21, has written a juicy one.

The memoirs contain wild stories about Stern snorting real cocaine for the film Honky-Tonk Highwayand his unsuccessful attempt to denounce Brett Ratner and Jeremy Piven for harassment on the set of his 1999 sitcom Partner.

And of course it also contains stories from his time on the set of one of his most famous films, Home alone.

In the book, Stern writes about his collaboration with the then ten-year-old Macaulay Culkin (who had already worked as a child actor for years before his leading role in the film) and about how he spent a day with Culkin in the park in his free time.

“He was a nice boy, but he had a very different life than my children. He couldn’t play catch or throw a ball. He was more of a homebody and was under a lot of pressure from show business, parents and so on,” Stern recalls in his memoirs.

Stern also describes the attention and material gifts Culkin received from Michael Jackson, who had begun a relationship with the young actor.

Culkin starred in Jackson’s 1991 video for Black and white the year after Home alone Premiered.

“We realized he had developed a friendship with Michael Jackson because when we picked him up, his hotel room was literally stuffed from wall to wall and ceiling to floor with toys,” Stern writes.

He continues: “Every toy imaginable, as if someone had gone through Toys ‘R’ Us, grabbed one of each and dropped it in their room. All a gift from Michael Jackson. We all felt really bad for Mac. My children had had a taste of the distortions that fame can bring, but when we saw what Mac’s life was like, it put things in a different perspective.”

Stern and Culkin later starred together in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York in 1992.

Culkin, now 43, is currently in a relationship with former Disney Channel star Brenda Song.

The couple has two children together.
