Gregor Haas has sent a message to his son from behind the bars of his Philippines jail cell.

The 46-year-old, who is the father of Brisbane Broncos star Payne Haas, was arrested in Cebu City in the Philippines last Wednesday on drug trafficking charges.

Gregor is reportedly facing extradition to Indonesia, having allegedly evaded Indonesian authorities since last December.

Now the Aussie, who could face the death penalty in Indonesia, has delivered a message home to his son.

“He asked me if he could send a message to his son, Payne, and tell him that he loves him and that he is sorry,” 7NEWS’ Rachel Baxter said after speaking to Gregor.

“No one in his immediate family has been in touch with him or has been here to see him which makes me think we may be very well the last people to see him here the Philippines before he is deported to Indonesia.”

Gregor has been charged with trafficking 5kg of crystal methamphetamine from Mexico into Indonesia with authorities working on extradition from the Philippines.

“We will immediately take him and ask him to reveal his network in Indonesia and other places. He used to move a lot, not only in Indonesia but other countries as well,” Brigadier General Sulistyo Pudjo Hartono said via Indonesian news agency ANTARA.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese weighed in on the incident and said the government will provide consular assistance to Gregor.

“The Australian Government has a bipartisan position of being opposed to the death penalty for a long period of time,” Albanese said.

“That remains our position and we always make representations. It is, of course, at a very early stage of these accusations which have been made.

“We will provide consular assistance to Mr Hass, as we do for all Australian citizens in such circumstances.”

While authorities are said to be working towards extradition, a report suggests extradition is no certainty as “one senior figure from the Indonesian National Police believed Australia’s ‘approval’ was necessary”.

The Philippines were also a signatory in an international agreement that prohibits extradition if it led to execution.

There are no suggestions any other Haas family members are involved in the allegations levelled at Gregor Haas.

The Courier Mail reported in March that Payne Haas had taken custody of his two younger brothers after Gregor had moved overseas to focus on business interests.

It comes after Haas’ mother Uiatu “Joan” Taufua faces manslaughter charges over a horror crash that killed three people in December 2022.
