Sam Darcy scored the game-winning goal in the Western Bulldogs’ victory on Friday night, although this was not evident from the reaction of his father Luke in the commentary box.

The Bulldogs produced one of their best performances of the year, defeating an undermanned Magpies side 15.10 (100) to 12.10 (82) at Marvel Stadium.

Collingwood gained a narrow lead in the first period, but the game developed into a close contest.

But the Pies didn’t score a single goal in the fourth quarter, while the Bulldogs took an 18-point lead with five majors.

Darcy sensed that Collingwood had caught up again in the last minute and put the result beyond question with an excellent passage of play in attack a few minutes before the end.

Darcy blocked a kick from Pies captain Darcy Moore, then received a handball from Rory Lobb and fired a powerful goal from distance.

Channel 7 cameras immediately focused on his father Luke Darcy, who was commentating on the game on Triple M radio.

But instead of celebrating his son’s goal, Darcy Sr. remained stony-faced and without a smile on his lips in order to maintain his professionalism.

The Triple M AFL account wrote on X: “Sam Darcy scored the wonder goal but Duke gave us NOTHING!!!”

Mark Howard joked in the Triple M box: “Smile, big Duke.”

Football fans compared Darcy’s reaction to Carlton legend Stephen Silvagni, who reacted ice-cold when the camera panned to him after his son Jack scored a goal for the Blues.

This is certainly a contrast to Pies legend Peter Daicos, who went berserk when Nick Daicos scored the game-winning goal against Carlton last month.

One fan wrote on X: “Damn Luke Darcy is the new SOS! Great goal from his son and absolutely nothing. I know you’re working but get excited!”

Another said: “Not a huge Luke Darcy fan. BUT. He was fired by the public for his comments on dog games so he had to keep a low profile.”

“I would rather see and hear a father proud of his son than have nothing to show for it in order not to be fired on social media. Either way, he can’t win.”

Sports presenter Nick Quinn said: “If I ever play poker against Luke, I’ll just fold my cards and give him my money!”

Earlier this season, Darcy commentated on his son’s action for the Bulldogs against Fremantle in Perth and moved into the role of expert commentator for Channel 7.

Darcy was conspicuously quiet when his son touched the ball in this game, but did allow some insight when Sam scored a point and lined up to score just before the third quarter of play.

“(He) has a habit of getting a little closer to the man on the home stretch,” Darcy said of his son’s routine.

“Maybe take two steps back.”

Co-commentator Alister Nicholson joked: “Stop giving away your secrets, Darce,” while Jason Bennett said Darcy was bragging about “20 years of research on your part.”

Darcy is a board member of the Bulldogs.

Sam Darcy could be in trouble for bumping into Brayden Maynard early in the game, which led to a brawl.

The 20-year-old, who is a contender for the AFL Rising Star Award, said coach Luke Beveridge scolded him on the bench for incurring a 50-metre penalty too early.

“He gave me a nice little cake,” Darcy told Seven. “He said, ‘Don’t worry about your head and carry on.'”

The Bulldogs are now ranked 10th in the rankings as the win kept their hopes of reaching the final alive.
