James Gunn is coming off a major Disney disappointment at Marvel Studios
Despite the wealth of projects the new DCU could have for the first few years, James Gunn thinks he'll keep it to himself.
Who is Ultrabunny?
As a floppy-eared rabbit holding a sign, Ultrabunny first appeared in 2022. The Suicide Squad but only officially appeared in the DCU canon because of his stick-it-and-it-won't-it. Creature Commando episode 2. December 5's “The Tourmaline Necklace” revisits Indira Varma's the Bride and her tragic romance with Eric Frankenstein (David Harbour). While the episode jumps through history and the Bride's many runs with Eric, a flashback to the 90s features her wearing a black Ultrabunny t-shirt.
Gunn told BBC Radio 1 in 2021 how Ultrabunny started as a joke that he wanted to include Joel Kinnaman's Rick Flag Jr. in humor Wile E. Coyote tee for The Suicide Squad. Although Warner Bros. also owns Looney Tunes, Gunn says the studio was concerned about the popular cartoon's use of blood. In addition, he said that he felt a little 'strange', including the character:
“If it's Mickey Mouse, I'm fine, or if it's Wile E. and we're doing a Disney movie, I'm fine, but doing a Warner Bros. movie with Wile E. I felt a little weird. Plus, I'm working on a Wile E. movie, so it's like all these different things are coming together and I'm not sure about that.”
Instead, Gunn created Ultrabunny and shared his original image (seen above). With Ultrabunny acting as a stand-in for Wile E. Coyote, fans may notice some similarities, such as the couple holding a funny sign. For the original image, Gunn considered words like “the future is plaid” and “Elvis saves” before settling on “Obstacles are opportunities.”
Similar to how may lose The comic has Science Dog and the Amazon series has Seance Dog (rights issue), Ultrabunny is a fictional character that exists in the DCU universe, as The itchy & frantic scene in The Simpsons. Gunn highlighted the importance of Ultrabunny, posting on Threads and telling fans:
Ultrabunny is one of the most popular cartoons in the DCU universe. He was also featured in Peacemaker.
Gunn saying 'one of the most popular' suggests there are other cartoonists out there. Has Gunn made his superhero team out of anthropomorphic animals? At least the audience knows Superman and the rest of us might want to go back to the weird cartoon after a hard day saving the world.
Spectators noticed the difference between Eric Frankenstein's Ultrabunny tee and the one worn by Rick Flag Jr. The Suicide Squad. At that time, the Flag changed to a yellow tee that featured Ultrabunny holding a sign that read: “obstáculos son opportunidades.” (This is Spanish for “obstacles are opportunities.”) The character makes an unexpected comeback when Evan Calcaterra (Lenny Jacobson) wears an Ultrabunny t-shirt. peacemaker season 1, while there is an Ultrabunny action figure on the hood of Vigilante's (Freddie Stroma) car. Ultrabunny appears on Creature Commando further connecting the canon of the DCU.

James Gunn Gives Best Explanation on How Suicide Squad and Peacemaker Are DCU Canon
Suicide Squad and Peacemaker are 'mostly' canon in the DCU reboot, and James Gunn has given a new insight into the process.
The DCU already has its own mascot
Ultrabunny is something of a mystery, with her name and outfit suggesting that she has some sort of superpower. There is also the gag that his slogan is the production slogan The Suicide Squad. Whether or not Gunn gives him a backstory remains to be seen, but with fans seeming to respond well to his introduction, Ultrabunny could become a DCU character in his own right. In addition, it seems like a good time for sales – just look at how popular it is The MandalorianGrogu is gone.
“Chapter One: Gods and Monsters” is expected to be the first part of the ever-growing DCU that will add some of the weird and wonderful characters that the DCEU has never had, as well as new creations. Creature Commando wasted no time in fleshing out the wider world, with David Corenswet's Superman hinted at at least before the end credits rolled. Given Ultrabunny's popularity, it is expected that he will be featured in the fashion of many other characters, but what if he is destined for more?
Aside from the already packed Chapter One, Ultrabunny is able to excel in his own projects. Although an entire Ultrabunny movie seems unlikely after Warner Bros. pulled the plug. Coyote vs. Acme After that, Gunn's claim to fame suggests he has a plan. Also, if Gunn can pull it off and pitch the right project to Warner Bros., an Ultrabunny release could fill that Coyote-shaped hole. Creature Commando can also work.
There are more important characters to worry about, such as the abandonment of Batman in favor of Gods and Monsters, as well as the later arrival of fan-favorites Booster Gold, Martian Manhunter, and Wonder Woman. Even if Ultrabunny was nothing more than Gunn's comic strip because he couldn't use Wile E. Coyote, he could become a recurring Easter egg like Pixar's famous Pizza Planet trucks. However, imagine what Gunn could do with his bad mouthing of the Animal Justice League.
