The man accused of stabbing four people at a Melbourne discount store has faced a court.
Daniel Clavell, 36, appeared briefly before the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Thursday afternoon facing almost 30 charges including intentionally cause injury, recklessly cause injury, common law assault, assault with a weapon and armed robbery.
He asked a court to be place in “isolation”.
Police will allege he stabbed the owner of Amazing Bargains on Puckle St in Moonee Ponds and three members of the public on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency services rushed to the scene about 1.15pm, responding to multiple triple-0 calls reporting an “agitated man” assaulting people.
In a statement, Victoria Police said Mr Clavell was arrested nearby at the Moonee Ponds Railway Station in Melbourne inner northwest.
“At this stage the incident appears to have been random in nature and not terror related,” a spokesman said.
“Four people, two males and two females ranging in age from 30s to 80s, were taken to hospital for treatment to what is believed to be non-life-threatening injuries.”
In court, a lawyer acting on Mr Clavell’s behalf did not apply for bail, noting the accused man had “requested to be placed in isolation”.
“He’s been assessed already by forensicare, the recommendation is he be transferred to a psych unit as soon as practicable,” he said.
When questioned by Magistrate Brett Sonnet whether the Mr Clavell was a risk to himself, the lawyer paused before responding “not to himself”.
Mr Clavell was remanded into custody and will next appear in October.
