BOM forecast rainy weather to hit Australia

From Perth to parts of the Northern Territory and Queensland, Australians will be getting wet this week as a rain front moves across much of the country from Tuesday.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Mirian Bradbury said the rain front would reach the coast of Western Australia on Tuesday and then gradually move across the continent, reaching South Australia and the Northern Territory from Wednesday and moving into the eastern states on Thursday.

As the rain front moves towards the Western Australian border, it is likely to pick up tropical moisture from the Indian Ocean, Ms Bradbury said.

“This will feed any showers or potential showers that develop along that front line.”

The front could be accompanied by gusty winds and Ms Bradbury warned that “destructive winds” could occur in the Victorian Alps and the southern alpine region of New South Wales.

For the whole of Perth, the BOM forecasts rainfall amounts of between about 15 and possibly 50 mm from Tuesday to Thursday.

According to Weatherzone, up to 80 percent of Australia could be hit by rainfall, partly due to a possible second rain event that could reach Western Australia later this weekend.

Adelaide could receive between 8 and 25 mm of rainfall on Thursday and Friday.

In Melbourne, rainfall between 2 and 18 mm is possible on Thursday and Friday, while in Sydney, rainfall between 1 and 40 mm is possible from Friday into the weekend.

But the rain will not stop this weekend: Both Weatherzone and BOM are predicting a second rain system that will bring even more rain to WA from Saturday or Sunday.

The rain front will bring wet weather to parts of Australia that have suffered from a rainfall deficit so far this year, Ms Bradbury said, including Perth and Adelaide.
