Once the player has survived several days and proven their mettle, the Mutants can begin to appear on the surface. Mutants are very violent and will even attack groups of cannibals for no reason. Especially when exploring the cave system, the player needs to wear powerful weapons to kill the Mutants and avoid attacks. Wrong turn-esque scenario. Flaming arrows

Fire arrows can be fired from a custom bow or a modern bow. To ignite an arrow, the player can use light fire or smoldering fire, and as soon as the Flaming Arrow makes contact with an enemy, it will set them on fire, causing flaming damage. Even when enemies are on fire, they will stop their progress to move around for a few seconds, giving the player a chance to close in and finish them off.

This is especially effective against Fingers and Caterpillar Mutants, as Fingers can surprise them with a powerful attack and Caterpillars are quick on their feet, so a Molotov hit will slow them down.

For a close range weapon that packs a punch, the Shotgun goes with the rifle. Other weapons like Bows and Explosives are worth keeping in the deck to take down larger types of Mutants, but it's hard to go with the Shotgun. Especially when using buckshot ammo, Shotgun explosions can cause significant damage.

Swarms of Mutants are also no match for the Shotgun as the spread of pellets can take out a bunch of them at once. Buckshot, the most powerful non-explosive ammo Children of the forestcan kill Fingers, Twins, or Blue Puffys in just three shots. The Shotgun can be found in the marked cemetery on the northern peninsula of the map; you need a GPS tracker and a shovel to get it.

Exploding in Children of the forest from Molotovs and Grenades to Sticky and Time Bombs. Almost any type of explosion will cause significant damage to any Mutant, but the explosion is perfect for taking out Fingers, Twins, Caterpillars, Sluggys, and Jianyu Zhang – the final boss of the game.

Finding or repairing them is not as difficult as it seems. Grenades can be found in cases all over the map or cave floor and Molotovs can be made from alcohol bottles and cloths, but Sticky Bombs are a bit trickier. They require C4 Bricks, clocks, circuit boards, coins, tapes and cables.

Due to their unique anatomy, Armsy and Legsy Mutants have a few natural advantages that can quickly become disorganized. Armsy moves with amazing speed and charges the player to attack first, while Legsy uses a jumping attack. Legsy also hangs from the ceiling in the cave hoping to attack the player.

They are both weak to explosions, but another safe way to take them out involves creating a lot of traps in the game. Children of the forest has many creative traps. Some of the best ones are the Hokey Pokey Trap, the Molotov Tripwire, the Explosive Tripwire, the Spring Trap, and the Silent Alarm. These traps in particular will alert the player to the presence of enemies, lift enemies into the sky, or set them on fire – among other things.

Perhaps one of the best long-range weapons, the Crossbow can catch Mutants off guard. Getting the Crossbow is hard work, but it's worth the investment, especially against mutants that are slow. Instead of risking or dying in a close encounter, it's easier to fire off a few arrows to get in some shots without diving into harm's way.

Crossbows are useful for Puffys, who are blind and therefore rely on their other senses to identify players. Since they can't see people up close, it's easy to spy from a distance. Virginia's parents, Edward and Barbara, appear as mid-game bosses, and they can also be taken down with the Crossbow.

The Cross

Burn demons and save ammo for the next part of the game

When the player goes through the last cave, which is full of demons, it is worth having a cross handy so as not to waste ammo unnecessarily. Crosses burn demons, but they will not affect cannibals. Virginia can become uncomfortable if the player uses a cross, which can also scare the cave dwellers if they are not already enemies. It is possible to upgrade the Cross with six Solafites, giving it a small increase. Solafite can be mined with a Pickaxe or Solafite Generator and the tool is used to upgrade several weapons, not just the Cross.

Solafite upgrades the Axe, Katana, Pistol, Revolver, Shotgun, and more. Demons won't show up until the end of the game, so there's no need to rush to find a Cross right away. However, as players find themselves exploring more caves, it's worth remembering that the Cross can save a lot of ammo.
