Star Wars video games have come as far as the franchise itself, with hits and misses over the years. They went through a generational game, as they reached the height of the Millennium Falcon hyperjump, and the relentless bottom of the multi-toothed Sarlaac pit.
Fortunately for PS4 and PS5 players, there are plenty of brilliant Star Wars games just waiting to be explored. No matter what kind of Star Wars fan you are, these games will have you blasting your way through a galaxy far, far away faster than you can shake a two-dimensional light.
9 Star Wars Pinball VR
“Pinball?” you say, “yes the Star Wars list?”. Just hear us out. Star Wars Pinball VR is a fun way to experience your favorite space series in a whole new light, especially when played in VR.
When it comes to pinball, Zen Studios knows what they're doing, and they're bringing their vast knowledge of the genre to the world of Star Wars. It's an absolute blast to roll a bunch of tiny metal balls through the many pinball tables based on the best Star Wars movies and TV shows.
It's great to see some of your favorite characters come to life around the table in VR. A must for pinball fans.
8 Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series
This is the last VR title on this list, we promise. Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series offers an amazing Star Wars experience wearing a VR suit. The game consists of three episodes where you play from the point of view of a lightsaber smuggler who fights against the baddest men in the Galaxy.
Despite its short length that leaves a lot to be desired, there are hardly any games out there that capture the feeling of being a Jedi like Vader Immortal. You'll squeal with joy as you force Stormtroopers out of your way with ridiculous ease and engage in intense lightsaber duels with Vader himself.
7 Star Wars Episode I Racer
The next two games on our list are ports, not PS4 or PS5 originals, by any means. Please don't take it as if we've run out of good ideas; more of a tribute to both of their greatness, and their ability to work with new material. (There were a couple of ports we thought were included, like Republic Commando; unfortunately, the remasters are a bit shaky.)
In any case! Star Wars Episode I Racer is a treasure for anyone who has seen The Phantom Menace, and either loved the movie relentlessly, or considered the podracing part to be one of its saving graces. You'll feel like you're there, running for dear life, with a variety of people and crafts to match the location.
If you dig Racer, check out the sequel, Racer Revenge – also available on PS4. Not quite as good as the first one, at least for us, but almost as good. It also brings a few nice things to the table.
6 Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast
But why are these secret smugglers suddenly becoming Jedis? Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast has you take control of Kyle Katarn as he leaves behind his old mercenary ways and embraces the exciting and challenging life of a new Jedi on the block.
Many will argue that Jedi Academy did it better, but for our money, Outcast has more interesting characters, tougher puzzles to solve, tighter storytelling, and a better cast of memorable characters. As always, the power-ups are fun, and the lightsaber fights are satisfying and responsive.
Unfortunately, the PS4 port lacks the stellar multiplayer of the original, but this is one that Star Wars fans shouldn't miss.
5 Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
There are a lot of Lego Star Wars games out there, but none feel as complete and rich as Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Featuring nine of the greatest films, the Skywalker Saga features all of the series' favorite characters in glorious animated Lego form.
The popular humor of the Lego games makes a welcome return, and introduces many new features and additions that help bring the series into the next generation.
Now there are more spacious open areas to get lost in and explore, glowing space levels where you can get behind the wheel of your nearest star, and improved combat mechanics for lightsabers and blasters.
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga also has the largest list of Lego Star Wars games, with more DLC.
4 Star Wars Battlefront 2
After an embarrassing start full of pointless loot boxes, Dice's Star Wars Battlefront 2 has steadily grown into the ultimate way to experience Star Wars in shooter video game form.
Like the old Battlefront games, you will take part in a tough fight in a third-person shooter while you fight big battles in the most famous locations of the entire saga.
There are several classes to try your hand at, ground and space vehicles to pilot, and a variety of some of the series' favorite heroes and villains.
Many improvements, new modes, classes and maps have been added over the years, making it one of the best ways to experience the entire story.
3 Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Borrowing heavily from the vast exploration of Metroidvanias and the punishing skill-based combat of Soulslikes, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a single-player adventure game for goodness sake that comes suddenly from EA and Respawn.
As one of the last Jedi left after Order 66, you play as Cal Kestis as he tries to fight the evil forces of the Empire and interact with the force. It's a massive galaxy-spanning adventure that includes fun lightsaber battles, challenging boss encounters, a sense of progression and exploration, and a great Star Wars story all wrapped up in one.
2 Star Wars: Squadrons
Star Wars: Squadrons took off right away when it was announced in 2020. Although many Star Wars starfighter games have been released over the years, Squadrons came at a time when the space combat genre was starving.
It has all the bells and whistles you'd expect from a high-budget EA game, including dogfighting mechanics, beautiful visuals, and a competitive multiplayer experience. It's also one of the most impressive and polished starfighter simulators ever, and it's also available in VR.
1 Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
Respawn's thrilling 2023 sequel to Fallen Order is everything a sequel should be. It's bigger, better, more powerful, and gets to the heart of colorful actors in a way that 'establishment' cannot. Cal is put through the ringer here – dare we say it, cliché though it may be, but this is Empire Strikes Back to Fallen Order's A New Hope. D
Appreciate you and roll with the PS5 version, by the way. If there's a looming criticism of Survivor, it's that it's efficient, and as you can imagine, it's better with newer hardware.
There are some Star Wars gems on PS4 and PS5, but even with the aforementioned issues, Jedi: Survivor is easily our favorite. It will be years before we see the next (and possibly last) of Cal Kestis' epic galactic adventure, but at least it gives us enough time to review it in preparation.
