The Bell of Chernobyl
Investigating When The Disaster Was Still New
- Release: 1987
- Director: Rollan Serhienko
This excellent documentary on the Chornobyl disaster came out in 1987, just a year after it happened. The film has tons of footage of the area still fresh after the disaster and, especially, interviews with those who lived through it. There are also details of those who are just starting to get sick as a result of the disaster.
Despite the more relaxed policy of perestroika (or reconstruction), and the censorship is not as strict as it was a few years ago, it is still reasonable to take some of the information from the analysis with salt. However, it is a fascinating document about the state of the region a year later.
The modern spelling of the power plant is Chornobyl, based on the Ukrainian spelling, but we kept it as it was originally in the title to make the movie easier to find online.

Even after the brutal realism of Chernobyl HBO miniseries, the reality damaged released shortly after the actual events and directed by a Ukrainian director who is still worth watching. Although obviously not a photo shoot like the Craig Mazin show, the photography technology of the time and the fact that they were filming in the area without having to recreate the period -history adds something unique to it that no modern interpretation can fully capture.

Atlantis
A Veteran Battling PTSD in a Harsh World
- Release: September 4, 2019
- Director: Valentyn Vasyanovych
Atlantis is from the Ukrainian director Valentyn Vasyanovych. It takes place soon after the war with Russia has polluted parts of the country, making it almost uninhabitable. The main character is a veteran of that war, suffering and dealing with the effects of PTSD.
Atlantis's told with long takes from the widest possible angle, showing the gloomy world in which the action takes place. Despite this tragic situation, the film has a message of hope and moving forward from trauma. STALKER uses a futuristic sci-fi setting to inspire and stimulate exploration in the player.
