Minecraft: How to get music discs and what they do

Music CDs are a rare (if not essential) item players can collect in Minecraft — we're here to explain how to find them and how they work.

Originally called record, the music disc was first introduced to the game in 2010 and received the official name of 'music disc' in the v1.0.14 update. In 2011, nine new music tracks were added to the 1.0.0 Adventure update and the full release of the game. The Nether Update changed that and renewed the love and exploration of music CDs, so here are the best of the game.

waiting

Waiting is a fun and satisfying remix of the Minecraft song. It is marked with a blue center and is the only disk in the game to be named. Its original name was 'Where are we now' but it had to be changed due to the problem of implementing spaces in its name.

The song features smooth synths with excellent electronic drum work. Listening to the song is like being lost in a daydream, which makes sense given its original name.

11

11 CDs, also known as 'Eleven', are CDs you can pick up in the crowd. When the creeper is killed by the skeleton, there is a chance that this disk will be broken, and it is the only disk that can be seen to be broken in the game.

This song is one of the most haunting in the game due to its dark sound. Heavy breathing sounds, breaking barriers, and footsteps play under static vinyl that emits an eerie track. To make it even more frightening, the road suddenly ends with a chaotic noise.

Steel

Stal is one of the nine music discs released with the Adventure Update. The music disc is recognized by the black colored center, which is very similar to the 11 disc, but without meaning.

Minecraft: The best adventure map on the market

Minecraft is all about building, exploring and experimenting with everything the game has to offer. These maps add a lot to everyone's world.

The song is a really fun jazz-like piece with piano, saxophone, and double bass being the three main instruments you'll hear throughout the song. In a few interludes, a recorder takes the front step and adds a little fun to the track.

7

Ward

Ward is one of the nine music discs added to the full release of the game. It is one of the few disks that share a green center but is a darker green color, unlike the nearly identical Cat and Far disks.

The music disc begins with a very haunting excerpt from Chopin's Funeral March before vinyl static stops and transitions to a more electronic soundtrack. Even at the beginning you can still hear a dark tone in the song.

You can find a lot of items in the Trial Chambers while playing Minecraft, but only a select few are really useful. Here is the best loot list!

The song starts with bells that immediately give off a Christmas-inspired feel with synths coming in but then turns into a fast rhythm with drums and other instruments. The cliff sounds like a song meant for you to play when you take on the Hall of Justice.

Creator

Creator is another music disc added to the game in the Tricky Trials update and can only be obtained as a reward in the courtroom from the dangerous vaults. Even the disc itself appears to be made of copper.

The Creator starts with a melody in a music box and continues with an inspired melody during the song. However, the electric and acoustic guitars are included and elevate the song and add a strange feeling to it without returning to the end of a soft music box.

4

Pigstep

Minecraft 1.16 is a major update since the Nether Update, which added new biomes, mobs, obstacles, loot and more to the Nether. There was also the addition of Bastion Remnants, which contained rare loot that could only be obtained in the Nether.

Pigstep is one of those rare things and it became very popular thanks to the songwriter Lena Raine. It was the first album to depart from the previous sound with dubstep and hip-hop inspiration. Not to mention, the disc also appears to be made of gold and netherrack.

13

13, also known as 'Thirteen', was one of the first two music tracks added to Minecraft during Alpha v1.0.14 in 2010, which introduced the jukebox in game too.

The disc is marked with a gold and white center. It's a dark cave-themed track inspired by the 13 cave ambient sounds that were part of the game when the disc was added and can be heard throughout the track.

2

Cat

Cat is one of the first two music tracks to be added to Minecraft. Like most music tracks in the world, Cat can be picked up automatically from a rainstorm if killed by a skeleton, from a dungeon, an old town, or a forested building.

The song is a very playful tune with warm, bubbly synths and soft percussion throughout the song. When listening to the song, it really sounds like the theme song for cats doing what they want. In the Legacy Console Edition of Minecraft, a minute of a song plays after finishing Cat, which is titled Dog.

Other side

While Pigstep may have introduced many Minecraft fans to Lena Raine which is arguably one of the best songs ever introduced to the game, Otherside is similar to Pigstep's reputation for getting it right.

1.18 saw the Caves & Cliffs: Part 2 update released in 2021 and the Otherside music was added, which can be found in a castle or dungeon. In 1.19, music CDs were added to loot ancient cities. It's a happy, retro, uplifting song that sounds like the song you'd play at the end of a long road trip.
