RIYADH: Smart cities have become an integral part of Saudi Arabia’s urban development priorities, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to leveraging technology for sustainable urban growth.
As part of the Kingdom’s strategic vision for digital transformation and urban development, the Smart Cities Saudi Expo will take place from September 24 to 26 at the Riyadh International Convention and Exhibition Center.
According to the IMF, Saudi Arabia is the fastest-growing economy in the G20 and is experiencing a rapid increase in its urban population; around 85 percent of the population lives in urban areas.
The Kingdom’s infrastructure ecosystem is evolving rapidly along with its growing population and the need for smarter, more sustainable and technologically advanced cities has increased rapidly, leading to significant changes in demographics, infrastructure requirements and urban planning strategies.
The Smart Cities Saudi Expo will play an important role in advancing the Kingdom’s journey towards smart city developments, creating opportunities for business engagement and facilitating networking with those at the forefront of smart city implementation.
“The first Smart Cities Saudi Expo will promote cognitive living in Saudi Arabia by showcasing innovative and smart solutions tailored to cognitive environments,” Muhammed Kazi, senior vice president of dmg events, the expo’s organizer, told Arab News.
“Given the growing demand for urban living in the Kingdom, the event is in line with the country’s commitment to advance smart city initiatives and drive urban transformation through the seamless integration of human, robotic and citizen-centric solutions,” he said.
Incorporating digital solutions into infrastructure development is crucial for building smart cities. Smart infrastructure includes intelligent transportation systems, energy-efficient buildings, smart power grids and sustainable waste management.
These advances improve resource management, reduce environmental impact and improve the overall quality of life of residents.
At the Smart Cities Saudi Expo, local and international exhibitors from 25 countries, including Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Egypt, Greece, India, Poland and the United Arab Emirates, will showcase products and services that support the Kingdom’s smart city ambitions.
Saudi Arabia-based Meter, a digital platform that provides innovative surveying and engineering solutions through modern technologies and artificial intelligence, has joined the event as a silver sponsor.
The participating exhibitors present systems, solutions, products and services in specific product areas such as digital economy, urban mobility and transport, smart buildings and infrastructure, smart administration, IT and telecommunications, sustainability and environment, and security and safety.
The event will focus on smart traffic management, public transport systems, electric and autonomous vehicles, smart parking solutions, building automation systems, smart lighting and energy management, building security and access control, video surveillance and analytics, emergency response systems, public safety sensors and alarms, e-government services, citizen participation platforms and open data initiatives.
Saudi Arabia’s vision for the cities of the future is taking shape through several gigaprojects, such as NEOM, led by the Public Investment Fund, which is making significant progress in integrating artificial intelligence, robotics and human intelligence to develop state-of-the-art, digitally sustainable and cognitive cities.
“This progress has made the Kingdom a hub for smart city innovation and technology and further reinforces the need for the Smart Cities Saudi Expo to promote cognitive living,” said Kazi.
The timing of the Smart Cities Expo is strategically well-timed amid the comprehensive urban transformation under Saudi Vision 2030, which focuses on developing smart, sustainable cities to improve the quality of life.
