AFLW; Tuesday and Wednesday games included in 2024 fixture

The AFLW will play eight games on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as part of the “Midweek Footy” campaign introduced for the 2024 season, expanding this to eleven home and away games per team.

These include games during the week of the AFL finals at Ikon Park in Melbourne as well as a spectacular four-game spectacle on the eve of the final.

The Sydney Swans, who have worked their way up from a winless last-place finish in 2022 to the 2023 finals, open the season against Collingwood at North Sydney Oval on Friday 30 August, culminating in a grand final on 30 November.

Last year’s finalists, Brisbane and North Melbourne, will also face off in week one, with the reigning leaders Lions hosting the game and unveiling their flag.

Midweek matches will be played in a four-week block from week four to week seven, with the Pride round taking place in week seven and the Indigenous rounds in weeks nine and ten.

Playing Tuesday and Wednesday games during school holidays for the first time was seen as an opportunity to attract more fans to the games.

“The NAB AFLW is currently witnessing the establishment of traditional top-flight matches and the consolidation of club rivalries,” said Josh Bowler, AFL’s head of broadcast operations and planning.

“We consulted with a number of key stakeholders in planning the fixture list, including the AFLPA, clubs and head coaches, to determine the most appropriate structure for the season.

“The midweek games fall during the school holidays and provide great opportunities for fans to be there and watch the games from home on nights when football is not traditionally played.

“We believe it is important for our fans to maintain the weekend broadcast time structure of previous seasons while adding an additional midweek game in the middle of the competition for fans to enjoy.”

The AFLW will also bring games to all corners of Australia, including Mackay, Cairns, Ballarat, Canberra and Darwin.

For the first time, a game will be played in Coffs Harbour when the Swans face Richmond in week three.
