The AFL has strengthened its stance on Tarryn Thomas’ playing future after the disgraced former North Melbourne player was charged with allegedly harassing a former partner.

Thomas was arrested on Tuesday after a police investigation into claims he had allegedly called his former partner several times.

The AFL said it would seek to have him permanently barred from all levels of the game pending “the hearing and determination of the charges”.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said Thomas had been charged with using a telecommunications service to harass and breaching a court order.

“Police have charged a 24-year-old Ormond man in relation to reports of alleged harassing phone calls,” she said.

“Police executed a search warrant at a premises in Ormond on Tuesday 21 May about 11.15am.”

Thomas was suspended for 18 matches and banned by the Kangaroos in February after he was found guilty of several breaches of the AFL’s player code of conduct.

While the door had been left open for Thomas to play again after his suspension if he satisfied several league requirements and showed behavourial change, the AFL said on Tuesday it would seek to stop him returning.

“The AFL is aware of today’s developments in relation to Tarryn Thomas including that he has been charged with offences that are now before the courts,” league spokesman Jay Allen said.

“The AFL cannot and will not make any comment in relation to those new charges while the police investigation is ongoing.

“The AFL reiterates that under the sanctions previously imposed on Mr Thomas by the AFL, he currently cannot train or play at any level of Australian football without the approval of the AFL including once his 18-match suspension expires.”

The statement said the AFL would act to prevent Thomas being signed by any club following the lifting of his suspension and stop him ever making a return.

“Please note that the AFL will specifically not permit Mr Thomas to join the list of any AFL club pending the hearing and determination of the charges that have now been brought against him and subject to the outcome of those proceedings,” it read.

“More broadly, it is the AFL’s intent that Mr Thomas will not be approved to play at any level of Australian football pending the hearing and determination of the charges that have now been brought against him and subject to the outcome of those proceedings.

“The AFL will continue to monitor the police proceedings.”

Thomas was bailed to appear at Broadmeadows Magistrates’ Court on November 21.
