SUMMARY
- The next HDMI 2.2 display standard is said to be launched at CES 2025.
- HDMI 2.2 will have “increased bandwidth” that allows higher resolution and refresh rates than the current HDMI 2.1 standard, but the exact specs are under wraps.
- HDMI 2.1 allows up to 4K 120Hz without compression, while HDMI 2.2 can target 4K 360Hz and even 8K 144Hz.
A recent report suggests this HDMI 2.2 will be officially announced at CES 2025. The next-generation specification of the popular display technology is expected to feature higher resolutions and refresh rates than the current HDMI 2.1 standard, and a new cable to boot .
Launched in 2017, HDMI 2.1 has long been the preferred interface and is found in high-end monitors and TVs, as well as current consoles such as the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S. HDMI 2.1 is ideal for gaming as it offers resolutions and refresh rates of up to 4K 120Hz unencumbered at a maximum bandwidth of 48Gbps, and when Display Stream Compression is included, it can be streamed over it's 10K 100Hz. These requirements are still not met by the current cards and displays, but it seems that the HDMI standard is ready to go to the next step regardless.

ASUS' latest monitor to bring dual-mode refresh rates to casual gamers
ASUS is set to unveil seven new monitors at CES 2025, including a 4K IPS gaming monitor with dual-mode 4K at 160Hz and 1080p at 320Hz display.
According to an HDMI Forum press release reported by Italian website Digital Day, HDMI 2.2 is set to debut at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2025. The exact specifications for HDMI 2.2 are likely saved for the technology event, but the press release notes that the next-generation HDMI interface will offer “increased bandwidth” the HDMI 2.1 and will support the “diversity” of higher resolutions and refresh rates. A new HDMI cable will also be included with HDMI 2.2 to enable the aforementioned upgrade.
Next-Gen HDMI 2.2 specification is said to launch at CES 2025
Outside of a small minority of dedicated fans, most players have yet to adopt the HDMI 2.1 standard, so it should be interesting to see how far HDMI 2.2 pushes the technological envelope. There is also the question of backward compatibility between HDMI 2.2 ports and older HDMI versions. It has not yet been confirmed, but if HDMI 2.2 uses the same signal system as its predecessor only with a higher bandwidth, backward compatibility may be on the cards. With 4K 120Hz already supported by HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2.0, HDMI 2.2 may aim for flagship displays like 4K 360Hz or even 8K 144Hz.
In addition, the release of HDMI 2.2 is said to coincide with other hardware announcements expected at CES 2025. AMD is said to release RDNA 4 graphics cards at CES 2025, and Nvidia is expected to also release the 50 series graphics card in the event. With manufacturers competing fiercely in the GPU market, it will be interesting to see if any of them commit to the HDMI 2.2 standard to signal readiness for future display technology.
