As one of the most popular horror games of all time, it follows Silent Hill 2 will have a strong opening to match the quality of the rest of the game. Instead of immediately throwing the player into a world of horror, it opens with a section of Mary's letter, which James ponders as he looks away. What makes this letter so special is what Jacob said – this letter was written by his dead wife.
The pacing of this opening is well handled, as there will be time to explore and introduce the unnamed city before the player encounters the first monster. It's a great way to give players a brief reprieve before mercilessly plunging them into unrelenting horror.

Ethan enjoys spending time with what he considers his family, before a rather tense and bloody situation gets involved.
But before that, the game begins in an unexpected way, with Mia telling the story found in the pages of a children's storybook, with a strange art style to match, when a girl got lost in the forest and got the gift. of the local landowners before incurring the wrath of the horse by stealing the weapon, thinking it was a tribute to him. Reading to babies can be a bit scary, as Ethan himself points out. Still, it's a dramatic opening that remains beautiful, and returns to the endgame with some parallels to be drawn in Ethan and Rose's relationship.
