BAGHDAD: A US diplomatic training facility in Baghdad was hit by an attack on Tuesday but no casualties were reported and damage assessments are underway, a US embassy spokesman said in a statement on Wednesday. .
Security sources told Reuters that two rockets fell at 11:00 p.m. on Tuesday near US forces stationed near Baghdad airport at the Camp Victory base.
“About 23:00 on Tuesday, September 10, there was an attack at the Baghdad Diplomatic Services Compound, a US diplomatic training facility,” the US embassy said in a statement.
“Fortunately, there were no casualties, and the damage and the cause are being assessed. Our assessment is ongoing,” he said.
Kataib Hezbollah, one of Iraq's Iran-backed armed groups, said the timing of the attack was clearly designed to disrupt a visit by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian that began on Wednesday.
The group called on Iraqi security forces in a statement released Wednesday morning to investigate the attack and determine who was responsible.
Pezeshkian, in his first trip abroad since being elected in July, is expected to sign a bilateral agreement with Baghdad and discuss the conflict in Gaza and the broader situation in the Middle East together. of Iraqi leaders.
Iraq, a rare ally of the US and Iran, hosts 2,500 US troops and has Iran-backed armed groups linked to its security forces.
